E SUMMMARY 1.0 Preamble Primary Teacher Education in Uganda is the responsibility of the Ministry of Education and Sports and Kyambogo University (KyU), working in collaboration with other Teacher Education institutions in the country. Initial Training for Primary School teachers is conducted in both Public and Private Primary Teachers Colleges, all of which are affiliated to Kyambogo University. The University has a fully-fledged Unit in the Academic Registrar's Office, with a Registrar in charge of Primary Teachers' Colleges and affiliated institutions. The Academic Registrar's Office works hand in hand with the Department of Teacher Education and Development Studies to handle issues related to Primary Teacher Education. Kyambogo University came into being as a Public University in 2003 after the merger of three institutions namely; Institute of Teacher Education, Kyambogo (ITEK), Uganda Polytechnic Kyambogo (UPK) and Uganda National Institute of Special Education (UNISE). The statute of 1989 mandated ITEK to take over all the responsibilities of the former National Institute of Education (NIE) of Primary Teacher Education (PTE) Training and Certification. Consequently, when Kyambogo became a Public University the 2003 Universities and Tertiary Institutions Act mandated the University to continue, through its constituent institutions, the Primary Teachers' Colleges, to manage the Primary Teacher Education (PTE) programme leading to the award of the Grade 111 Teachers' Certificate. To implement this mandate. Kyambogo University among others; • Conducts baseline surveys on primary teacher education as need arises. Designs and re-designs curricula for Primary Teachers' Colleges Sets criteria for admission and registration of PTE candidates Supervises and monitors the implementation of the PTE curriculum Assesses PTE candidates Awards certificates to successful PTE candidates.en_US
