dc.description.abstract1.1 Introduction In this chapter, the role of Kyambogo University in the production of the teacher professional profile has been described. In addition, the chapter includes the operational definition of the professional profile, the objectives for documenting the profile are stated as follows. ITEK is mandated by an Act of Parliament to train several cadres of teachers including tutors for Primary Teachers Colleges (PTCs) and National Teachers Colleges (NTCs) as well as education managers. In order to fulfil one of its tasks, Kyambogo University in collaboration with De Kempel in the Netherlands undertook the task of developing and documenting a professional profile (TePP) of a Ugandan primary school teacher. The, the professional profile describes the professional ethics, the key knowledge and skills, the tasks, and the levels of competence of the teacher in performing the prescribed tasks. The tasks are described as short statements with some indicators showing sets of activities or performances that a teacher must do. The TePP has been documented in order to achieve the objectives of primary education as stated below. 1.2 The Objectives of Primary Education To enable individuals to acquire functional literacy, numeracy and communication skills in one Ugandan language and English; To develop and maintain, sound mental and physical health; To instill the value of living and working co-operatively and other people and caring for others in the community, To develop cultural, moral and spiritual values of life To inculcate an understanding of, and appreciation for the protection and utilization and the natural environment using scientific and technological knowledge; To develop pre-requisites for continuing education and development; and to develop adequate practical skills for making a living. From the stated objectives of primary education, the objective derived for the professional profile is to enhance professional performance and development of the teacher, by enabling a teacher select relevant values and norms for teaching and dealing with pupils and others in a particular situation. The TePP also aims at helping a teacher to develop adequate knowledge and skills necessary to handle the subject matter and to apply them in the context of learning through professional development activities like seminars, workshops and upgrading. It also stipulates the essential professional culture for a teacher by clearly articulating the desired stages of professional development.en_US
